As we approach the end of the year, some of us may have already begun to look ahead to the new year. This means new starts and new adventures that await us. However, there may be a lot of things that we are carrying with us into this new year that are holding us back. It is important to make sure that you are decluttering what you no longer need.
1. Physical Decluttering
a) Objects
Decluttering 101: clean up your workspace. Keep necessities nearby and try to put away everything else. Are you keeping something because you need it or for sentimental reasons? Or are you just too lazy to throw it out? Decluttering can help in removing stress from your life.
b) People
Relationships come and go. If there is someone you know who is having a negative impact on your life, it may be time to consider cutting them out. It is difficult to have enough time to spend with those you care about and make time for yourself. Nurture the relationships that are mutually beneficial.
2. Mental Decluttering
a) Worries out of our Control
There are things that happen in our lives that we cannot control. Allowing those things to take up space in your mind is not healthy and is blocking you from moving forward. Coming to terms with this is hard. But realizing what you can control will help you understand how best to maneuver the path forward.
b) Setting Priorities
Having a clear idea of what tasks need to be done can help with stress immensely. Then, prioritize based on importance. There is no shame in saying: “this task will have to wait”. It’s not procrastination, it’s prioritization.
What is something that you have been holding on to for too long that it is time to let go of?
“Clutter is nothing more than postponed decisions”
