If you live in Ontario, then this upcoming Monday, February 21st is family day. A statutory holiday created with the intention that we take the day to spend it with loved ones. Due to the current circumstances, it can be hard to think about family day in a positive way. But something to remember is that our relationships are the most important things we have in our lives, and there are many ways to show our appreciation for those around us.
Reach Out
Taking the time to reach out to those you haven’t seen in a while even if it’s just through email is an easy way to ensure that you’re maintaining your relationships. Find a way to brighten someone’s day. We live in a world of doom and gloom, and so even sending someone a thoughtfully-worded email, or an ecard is a good way to do that.
There are a lot of online cards that you can send that can make someone laugh, or just genuinely make them happy. Even if you don’t want to talk to someone for very long, taking the time to reach out will mean a lot to the person, and to you as well.
Family Has More than One Definition
Family day isn’t just about blood, but chosen family too. The people that you hold dear to you, regardless of their relation to you, are just as important. The people who give meaning to your life are important to recognize this family day.
Many people may be estranged from their blood relatives or may live a considerable distance away, but that doesn’t mean that you are alone. The people who love you and give meaning to your life should also be celebrated. And don’t forget about pets! They absolutely count as family.
Find Peace
Take this time to find peace with your relationships, any grudges that you may be holding, find a healthy way to work through them so that you can let that anger go. Many of us may be forced to think of our relationships in a negative way since these kinds of holidays bring all of those feelings to the forefront.
Journaling is a great way to get your emotions out. Pinpoint what it is that’s upsetting you about this particular person so you can find peace. Reaching out to them is up to you, but holding on to anger is not healthy.
This family day, especially when we have all been separated from each other for so long, remember to reach out to your loved ones. Human beings are social animals, our relationships are the most important things in our lives.
“Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family: Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.”
